On June 22nd, ground will break for the new $1.5 million Homeless Shelter Community Center, fondly entitled "The Matthew 25 Community Center," in Tampa. This development is part of a concentrated effort by Catholic Charities, which began sheltering individuals in its Hope Cottages two months ago, to bolster support for the city's unhoused population. According to a report by the City of Tampa, the center will provide a suite of services including a kitchen, dining area, and sanitation facilities.
The initiative, in collaboration with the City of Tampa, has been in the works for two-and-a-half years and has already impacted over 1,100 clients, with 358 transitioning to housing post-stay. "I am proud of the work already done by the staff of Tampa Hope and their City of Tampa counterparts to address the care of our most vulnerable residents," Mayor Jane Castor stated, acknowledging the ongoing efforts. "But there is still much work to be done. This community center is one more step toward addressing homelessness in a way that is compassionate and considerate," as per the City of Tampa news release.
The 7,000 sq. ft. center will sit on six acres owned by Catholic Charities, located to the east of historic Ybor City. It symbolizes a bridge from temporary to stable housing, encapsulating the charitable message found in its biblical namesake. "We are excited to begin construction of the Matthew 25 Community Center funded through the generosity of Drew and Susan Peloubet,” said Catholic Charities Executive Director Maggie Rogers, as mentioned by the City of Tampa news release.
Since opening in December 2021, Tampa Hope has provided a lifeline to a wide age range of men and women, with stays averaging around 90 days. Services extend beyond basic needs to include medical care, along with life skills and financial management classes, substance abuse and mental health treatment. With construction underway, the new center is slated to open its doors next year, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing mission to bring stability and care to Tampa's homeless community.
