A 47-year-old Newport man was apprehended by authorities following a vehicular chase after he allegedly carjacked an olive green Subaru Outback in Monroe County, as reported by The Detroit News. The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 8, set off a rapid response from law enforcement after the initial report of the carjacking at around 7:30 p.m. on the 700 block of N. Macomb Street.
The owner of the stolen vehicle notified police that they had been attacked by the Newport man who then took off with the car, heading south on Macomb Street, Click-On Detroit conveyed. A prompt alert sent out by the Monroe Police Department, with details of the Subaru and its license plate, facilitated the swift location of the car as it traveled north on Monroe Street in nearby Frenchtown Township.
Pursuit ensued when a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the vehicle and the suspect failed to comply with the deputy's commands to stop. The chase continued onto northbound Telegraph Road, where another deputy deployed stop sticks that successfully punctured two of the Subaru's tires. WWJ Newsradio noted that, despite the tire damage, the suspect directed the hobbled vehicle into the Frenchtown Villa Mobile Home Park, leading deputies on a brief additional chase before coming to an abrupt stop.
Upon immobilizing the vehicle around the 8400 block of Maurice Court, the suspect attempted to escape on foot. However, he was quickly detained by police, The Detroit News details. He is being held at the Monroe County Jail and is expected to face multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, assault and battery on police, and resisting and obstructing. Charges connected to the initial carjacking are also being pursued by the Monroe Police Department.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has called for witnesses or anyone with further information about the incident to come forward and contact them at 734-240-7534. The investigation into the events surrounding the carjacking and subsequent pursuit is still ongoing, according to officials.
