The latest victim, 17-year-old Ebonique Farris, was honored Saturday as community members gathered in a vigil that included a balloon release and shared memories of the beloved teen. The vigil, which took place on 25th Avenue North, was a poignant display of grief and solidarity in face of a disturbing surge in youth violence.
According to WKRN, Farris was described by family friend Sparkle Johnson as one of "North Nashville’s babies," a humorous and light-hearted spirit who was quick to defuse conflicts. Anthony Brooks, 23, has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide in connection with Farris's killing, and is currently being held without bond at Nashville Downtown Detention Center, as reported by NewsChannel5.
The broader community impact of these repetitive tragedies was underscored in a statement obtained by WSMV, wherein a local named Marsh lamented the disrespect for human life among the city's youth. With each shooter in the recent incidents, including Brooks, being no older than 24-years-old, there has been an outcry for solutions to address juvenile crime in Nashville.
In remembering Farris, her great uncle reflected on the gravity of the loss, saying, "Here's an innocent little girl...whose life is gone from us all...and somebody that we're going to dearly, dearly, dearly miss." This sentiment was echoed through the communal gathering where attendees sought both to remember and to heal. However, despite earnest efforts by authorities, the wave of violence has not been fully stemmed; three of the four recent shootings have led to arrests with only the shooter of 16-year-old Justin Robinson remaining at large.
