A former Kent County man has been sentenced to nearly 8 years behind bars after creating disturbing videos where he sexually abused and killed dogs. Lucas Russell Vanwoert, 27, now a one-time resident of Mercer County, Ohio, has also been hit with a staggering 15 years of supervised release, as confirmed by a federal judge in Ohio.
Alongside the imprisonment, Vanwoert is ordered to cough up $9,000 in restitution and is permanently banned from owning or possessing animals, a decision stemming from a grotesque trail of violence against defenseless creatures. WZZM13 reports that the banned individual, moved in 2022, from the Grand Rapids area to Ohio, where he continued his vile abuses.
The case shook the community after investigators found Vanwoert in connection with child pornography and the dubious production of "animal crush" videos, which notoriously depict the ruthless assault and killing of dogs. Upon searching his Celina home in September 2022, authorities found multiple electronic devices loaded with child pornography featuring prepubescent children, and the incriminating animal crush videos.
The Department of Homeland Security cites that at least four dogs suffered at the hands of Vanwoert who then broadcast their torment to a global audience. These heinous acts were uncovered following an expansive probe involving Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) teams from Detroit, Cleveland, and Grand Rapids, alongside multiple other law enforcement partnerships.
In the wake of this grisly revelation, HSI Detroit’s acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey condemned the "crimes against animals and the possession of child sex abuse material" as they "target the vulnerable and the defenseless." Murphey also expressed a profound pride in the diligence of investigators who worked to ensure that Vanwoert, described as a predator, would face justice for his "grim and reprehensible" crimes, thereby making "the community is safer with him behind bars," Murphey told WZZM13.
