Cook County has gotten its act together when it comes to property tax bills: Second installment tax bills for Tax Year 2023 will be out by July 2 and landing in mailboxes shortly after, the county announced today. That's nearly 1.8 million pieces of mail and just as many bills available online. Homeowners take note: you've got until August 1 to pay up.
Property taxes are one of those certainties in life, like death and, well, more taxes, but they haven't been all that punctual since the pandemic threw a wrench in the gears. Previous years saw due dates slip toward the end of the calendar like an ice sheet breaking away from the Antarctic. The 2022 second installment hit mailboxes on December 30, bearing a stark contrast to this year's summer due date, and 2023's wasn't much better, with a December 1 deadline.
Why the back-on-track billing? It's thanks to the Property Tax Reform Group doing their weekly think-tank thing. They hail from a variety of Cook County offices—the Assessor, Clerk, Board of Review, and Treasurer—and according to the announcement, their teamwork has reworked the property tax system to benefit "all Cook County residents."
Here's the skinny: the whole tax bill process is a bit like sausage making—not pretty, but necessary. It syncs up a bunch of local and county agencies twice a year, once for each installment. It's this dance of bureaucracy that, when out of step, leads to delays. But thanks to some inter-office kumbaya sessions and collective brainpower, officials have wrangled the system back into its legally outlined schedule.
Bottom line, if you've got skin in the Cook County property game, expect a bill in your hand — or inbox — come early July. And if you're feeling thankful for the on-time notice, maybe send a nod to that Property Vancouver Group for getting their ducks in a row and your tax bill on your desk with a little sunshine to spare this summer.
