In an early morning tragedy on the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, a multi-vehicle rollover crash claimed the life of one person and injured several others, including six transported to local hospitals, and two with critical injuries. The incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. along the Inner Loop of I-495, near MD-97/Georgia Ave.
All lanes on the beltway at Georgia Ave. were closed following the accident and were reopened after approximately three hours, a disruption that rippled through the morning commute. According to FOX 5 DC, commuters were advised to seek alternative routes as the Inner Loop traffic was initially diverted to MD-97.
WTOP adds that the collision has also affected public transportation, with WMATA warning of delays for Red Line shuttle buses. The buses, which are substituting for the Red Line train service from Takoma to Glenmont during summer construction, encountered delays as a result of the beltway crash.
As the investigation into the circumstances of this fatal crash continues, the identities of the victims have not yet been released.
