A tragic incident unfolded in a Palm Beach County residential neighborhood on Sunday when a 5-year-old girl, riding her scooter, was struck and killed by a pickup truck. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene at the Rainbow Mobile Home Colony on S. Military Trail around 7:30 p.m., as reported by WPTV.
The young girl, identified as Isabella Lopez by family members, was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. According to the Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred near a curve on the road where the driver's view was obstructed by a parked truck and trailer. The driver, a 26-year-old man, was behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 truck at the time of the crash.
Isabella's mother, Bianca Rebolledo, lamented the loss of her daughter, who she described as "very friendly [and] very happy." In a heartrending statement obtained by WPTV, Rebolledo shared, "She had a very big heart. We all loved her." The young child had recently graduated from pre-kindergarten and was eagerly anticipating the start of kindergarten in the fall.
The specifics of the collision are still under investigation. According to a CBS12 report, the PBSO's Special Investigations Division has now taken over the investigation. Early reports suggested that the child fell off her scooter before being struck by the pickup truck. The issue of whether the driver was speeding prior to the incident and attempted to leave the scene, as mentioned by the girl's family, has not been confirmed by the authorities. The Sheriff Office's spokeswoman, Teri Barbera, stated that no charges have been filed but emphasized that the investigation is "still very, very active and ongoing." Attempts to reach the driver for comment by WPTV were unsuccessful.
In response to this heartbreaking incident, local community members are calling for increased traffic safety measures in residential areas to protect children. The memory of Isabella's untimely passing has ignited discussions about driver awareness and the importance of safe spaces for children's play in neighborhoods.
