In Peoria, two men have faced the consequences of their actions after violating firearm regulations. Christopher J. Melahn, 35, of Peoria, Illinois, has been sentenced to two years in prison followed by a three-year supervised release for illegally possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. Melahn's co-defendant, Jamarcus J. Hollingsworth, 30, received a lengthier sentence of 57 months in prison with the same period of supervised release.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of Illinois reported that the Peoria Area Federal Firearms Task Force acted on a tip in May 2023, concerning Hollingsworth's possession, and intent to sell firearms. The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of both Hollingsworth and Melahn at a local hotel, with each found in possession of a firearm.

Following their arrests, a federal criminal complaint was filed against the duo in May 2023, with an indictment ensuing in June. Hollingsworth pleaded guilty in September, whereas Melahn entered his guilty plea in October 2023. Both men have been detained by the U.S. Marshals Service since the time of their arrest.

Melahn's case is recognized as a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. In a broader context, the program ties together law enforcement at all levels to foster safer neighborhoods through a mesh of strategies, focused enforcement, supporting violence prevention organizations, and building community trust. On May 26, 2021, the Justice Department enhanced PSN to further clamp down on violent crime, as announced in a departmental strategy.
