A welfare check in Putnam County descended into gunfire Saturday afternoon as a man opened fire on deputies from inside a home on Highway 56. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has charged Danny K. Roberts with attempted murder following the shootout.
The deputies had arrived at the scene to perform a welfare check when Roberts allegedly began shooting out the front window, the Sheriff's Office reported. In an immediate response to the danger, a perimeter was established, and traffic was halted on the roadway at Nashville Hwy. The situation escalated as additional law enforcement joined the scene, together with Sheriff Eddie Farris.
Sheriff Farris managed to de-escalate the situation, leading to Roberts’ surrender. According to FOX 17, "Sheriff Eddie Farris negotiated a surrender of the subject."
Following his arrest, Roberts has been denied bond and is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, as detailed by WSMV. The charges come in the wake of a tense closure of State Route 56, impacting both northbound and southbound traffic, as notified by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
No deputies were injured during the incident, which remains under investigation. WKRN reported that no further details have been released at this time about the nature of the welfare check or what led Roberts to allegedly open fire on the officers.
