Tragedy struck early Sunday morning on Route 3 northbound near Braintree when a collision involving a deer and two vehicles resulted in the death of a Roxbury woman. According to a Massachusetts State Police report, a 2013 Toyota Rav4 initially made contact with a deer, prompting a chain of events that proved fatal for one of the vehicle's occupants.
The incident took place at approximately 3:10 AM. The stopped Rav4 was then involved in a secondary crash. The driver, a 63-year-old Roxbury man, managed to safely evacuate the vehicle, while the passenger, Magdalena Desrosiers, 35, of Roxbury, was less fortunate. She sustained serious injuries when an SUV trying to avoid the stopped Toyota swerved into the breakdown lane and hit her. Both the driver of the Rav4 and Desrosiers were taken to a hospital, where Desrosiers was pronounced deceased, according to the Massachusetts State Police.
Authorities have reported that the center and right travel lanes of the highway were closed for an extended period, causing disruptions. During cleanup and analysis operations, traffic was routed through the left lane. Local law enforcement worked alongside Braintree Fire and EMS, MassDOT, and several units of the Massachusetts State Police to manage the situation and facilitate the subsequent investigation into the crash's complexities.
The ongoing investigation is a coordinated effort between the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, with the stated objective of understanding the dynamics that led to this unfortunate loss of life.
