BART riders can finally say goodbye to some of the dated escalators at Market Street stations as new upgrades roll out in a bid to revamp the city's transport infrastructure, according to BART officials. The Escalator Replacement Project saw the Embarcadero Station's tired old escalator get a full makeover, completed on May 31. It now smoothly transports passengers from the platform to the concourse level.

And it's not just Embarcadero Station that's been getting some love; Civic Center and Powell Street stations are hot on its heels, with their escalator overhauls nearly complete, though a specific finish date eludes the eager public. In the meantime, Market Street has witnessed yet another upgrade: a shiny new canopy erected above the Montgomery Street Station entrance, set to shield both commuters and a soon-to-be-replaced escalator from the elements. This upgrade was completed on May 30.

The upgrades didn't come a second too soon, Market Street being a major artery pulsing with BART passengers daily. The Canopy and Escalator Rebuilding projects are a much-needed breath of fresh air to enhance security and overall cleanliness, a nod to the commuters' concerns that have plagued these stations.

Officials note that these are aesthetic improvements and functional enhancements meant to ensure reliability and safety for the millions that walk these grounds yearly.
