An 8-year-old boy who was fishing with his father early this morning fell into the Boynton Beach Inlet and is now the subject of a multi-agency search and recovery mission. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) confirmed the initial 911 call was received at 6:09 a.m., and the partnering agencies, including Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR), Boynton Beach Fire Rescue (BBFR), and the United States Coast Guard, have since been utilizing marine assets to aid in the search, as reported by CBS12.
The incident took place in the 6900 block of North Ocean Boulevard, and the boy's father called authorities immediately after his son fell from the pier, agencies responded, but the search quickly escalated to a recovery effort as time passed; "With the recovery mode, usually what happens — because of the time and been under the water for that amount of time — the chance for a successful rescue is very diminished," Capt. Tom Reyes of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue told WPTV. Efforts are ongoing even as the strong current presents challenges.
Following the incident, assets deployed in the area include jet skis, divers, and helicopters as part of a coordinated endeavor to locate the missing child. The search is seeing the collaboration of local and federal resources, tapping into a network of expertise geared towards maritime rescue and recovery operations.
The circumstances of the boy's fall remain under investigation, although authorities noted the inlet's current to be particularly strong, which complicates the search; the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office expressed that marine units from each participating agency are being deployed in a comprehensive sweep of the water, these teams are leveraging every available resource to find the boy as quickly as possible. Updates on this developing story will provide more information as the search progresses.
