After nearly two years since the fatal robbery at Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro, an additional arrest has been made related to the case. Artemio Torres, 28, was taken into custody for his role in the incident that left a security guard dead in September 2022. The arrest occurred during a routine traffic stop on May 27 by an officer from the California Highway Patrol Ventura Office in Oxnard. The suspect had attempted to obscure his identity by providing false information to the CHP officer.
According to a report by the San Leandro Police Department, Torres was initially identified as the driver in the robbery homicide. Despite eluding capture by purportedly fleeing the state, his eventual encounter with the law during a stop for a vehicle registration violation culminated in his arrest after the CHP officer uncovered an outstanding arrest warrant for him in Alameda County.
Torres' cohort, 28-year-old Akbar Bey of Oakland, believed to be the triggerman, had previously been arrested by San Leandro police in October of 2022. The capture of Torres closes a significant chapter in a case that shook the local community, particularly those connected to the healthcare facility where the crime occurred.
On June 3, Torres was extradited to Alameda County, facing felony robbery charges. The San Leandro Police Department has now affirmed that there are no other outstanding suspects in this tragic episode, putting to rest rumors of any further accomplices on the loose.
