A group of four men have been handed prison sentences after their participation in a widespread cargo theft operation was uncovered, with stolen goods amounting to over $1.7 million. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia reported that the defendants' thefts spanned across the southeastern part of the country.
"Thefts of interstate shipments disrupt the production and delivery of needed goods and result in detrimental financial impact on businesses, consumers, and the U.S. economy generally," said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan in a statement. The prosecution and subsequent sentencing of Yunior Hernandez, Roberto Quesada Lopez, Carlos Alberto Valdes, and Yubani Millares Vera highlights the government's crackdown on such criminal activities.
This cargo theft ring's crimes included the theft of more than $500,000 in computers in Macon, Georgia, and $640,000 worth meant for the Centers for Disease Control in Emerson, Georgia, among others. The Justice Department's press release detailed the list of stolen items and their respective values, painting a picture of the operation's scale and the financial damages inflicted.
Yunior Hernandez received a prison sentence of two years, nine months, while Carlos Alberto Valdes was sentenced to three years, ten months. Roberto Quesada Lopez and Yubani Millares Vera received sentences of two and a half, and five years, respectively. "This theft conspiracy did not stop at our state border, and neither did our investigation," said Keri Farley, FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge, emphasizing the cross-border nature of the crimes and the collaborative efforts to bring the individuals to justice.
The FBI led the investigation with help from the Miami-Dade County Police Department, Economic Crime Bureau, and the FBI’s Miami Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Huber prosecuted the case. In addition to prison time, the accused parties are required to pay restitution sums that mirror the severity of their offenses, with amounts owed ranging from upwards of $880,000 to approximately $1.7 million.
