On a regular Sunday evening, Springfield streets saw a swirl of police activity, culminating in the arrest of Jason Dunbar, a 24-year-old man previously wanted on numerous firearm and assault charges. According to a report released on the Springfield Police Department's official website, Dunbar was apprehended with a loaded gun and an alleged significant amount of crack-cocaine in his possession.
Reportedly, the series of events began around 6:06 p.m. when police were dispatched to a distress call originating from an apartment on the 0-100 block of Coomes Street. There, a suspect later identified as Dunbar was alleged to have pistol-whipped a female victim. Located in a parking lot near the scene, Dunbar attempted to flee briefly but was apprehended by officers after entering a vehicle that was quickly stopped by police.
Springfield Police detailed a tense moment during Dunbar's arrest when he began reaching toward his right pocket. Officers intercepted his movements and discovered a loaded firearm tucked away in that pocket. Further investigation revealed approximately 18 grams of narcotics, specified by police as crack cocaine. The arrest report lists several charges now faced by Dunbar, including firearm possession without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, trafficking cocaine, and multiple counts of assault, including battery.
Dunbar's history with the law is notably checkered, with outstanding warrants stemming from a May 9 incident on High Street. At the time of his recent arrest, he was already sought for firearm violations and assault-related charges. The police included in the list that he was in violation of an abuse prevention order, stalking, unlicensed vehicle operation, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest. These stacked charges could foreshadow a complex legal battle ahead for the Springfield resident.
