Chaos erupted in Lansing last Friday night when Michigan State Police troopers and Lansing Police Department officers found themselves in a high-speed chase with a suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Javon Basey, wanted on felony warrants. According to Audacy, the chase began when Basey, who was a passenger in a gray Ford F-150, was recognized by police conducting surveillance on North Capitol Avenue for his involvement in a previous incident where he managed to always successfully flee after a traffic stop in April.
Troubles escalated when the F-150 struck a patrol car while reversing and then took off, leading troopers on a chase that was abruptly terminated when the suspect drove onto school grounds, tearing across sidewalks and grassy areas at Lansing Everett High School. Despite the driver’s evasive maneuver, the abandoned vehicle was eventually found on North Walnut Street, reported Lansing State Journal.
A coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, which included a Lansing Police Department K-9 unit, eventually tracked Basey down to the rafters of a garage on Jenison Street. He was arrested without further incident and held at Lansing City Jail, as stated by WLNS. Basey is expected to face additional charges in connection to the reckless escapade.
Meanwhile, the driver who actively maneuvered to turn around and flee remains at large, though law enforcement has secured his identity and will likely begin to aggressively seek charges against him for felonious assault on a police officer and fleeing and eluding. "Once charges are authorized by the prosecutor's office, he will be located and arrested," Michigan State Police officials said, as per WLNS. The community breathes a sigh of relief as one suspect is apprehended while anticipating the eventual capture of the second to fully close this harrowing chapter.
