A man's death at Grundy County Jail last week is currently under the scrutiny of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), as confirmed by the Grundy County Sheriff's Office. The incident that precipitated this turn of events took place during the early morning hours of May 29 following a car crash on Sherrell Road in Pelham, after which the deceased, identified as Ronnie Ledbetter, reportedly became combative with EMS personnel, eventually leading to his physical assault on one of them.
According to WSMV, Ledbetter appeared to be "heavily intoxicated" on some type of narcotic, and continued to actively resist even after being cleared by EMS and taken into custody. It was reported that Ledbetter tried to kick out the glass in the backseat of a patrol unit and later, while being moved to a car with bars on the windows due to his attempts at head-butting the glass, continued to fight and resist deputies during the booking at the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.
After being secured inside the jail, a grave situation unfolded when deputies noticed that Ledbetter, having been seated and unhandcuffed, stopped breathing, pushing them to administer Narcan and start CPR. A defibrillator was also put into use, though these measures proved futile. Sewanee Hospital pronounced Ledbetter dead after he was transported there by ambulance, as stated in a report by OnTargetNews.
Further digging into Ledbetter's background revealed him to be a registered sex offender from Franklin County, holding a criminal history that dates back to 2003. As he was an escape risk with active warrants, his heart stopped beating in the midst of an altercation with law enforcement. The TBI is now piecing together the sequence of events that led to his demise. In pursuit of transparency, the sheriff’s office has cooperated by providing camera footage from the arrest scene and the jail to TBI agents, details of which were mentioned by The Tennessean.
The investigation remains active as authorities await the results of the autopsy to discern the definitive cause of Ronnie Ledbetter's death. The District Attorney's Office, along with the TBI, is working to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, though the question lingers on how a routine arrest escalated to a fatality within the walls of the Grundy County Jail.
