A 2-year-old girl has tragically drowned in a swimming pool at a home in the Tellico Plains area, as confirmed by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. WATE reported that the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12. The child was found unresponsive in the water after her mother, who had been outside with the children, stepped away briefly.
Following the incident, sheriff's deputies arrived and performed CPR on the young girl until she could be transported to Sweetwater Hospital, as per WVLT. At the hospital, the toddler was pronounced dead. Details surrounding the identity of the girl or the circumstances leading to the drowning have not been made publicly available by the authorities. A mother finding her child floating in the water represents every parent's worst nightmare, and in her panic, she pulled her daughter from the pool and began resuscitation efforts.
Detective Jason Fillyaw with Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said, "When she returned, the sheriff’s office said her 2-year-old daughter was found in a pool at the home", according to WATE. This tragedy underscores a grim statistic highlighted in the State of Tennessee’s 2023 Child Fatality Annual Report, which points to drowning as the leading death cause among children aged 1 to 4.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office did not release additional information pending the results of an autopsy. According to WBIR, the local community has been left to grapple with the loss, a reminder of the ever-present need for vigilance around swimming pools, particularly with children who are of such a tender age and so quick to find themselves ensconced in peril without a watchful eye in immediate reach.
