Tragedy struck on Western Avenue late Thursday afternoon when a head-on collision resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several children with serious injuries. The Knoxville Police Department responded to the distressing scene near John May Drive around 4 p.m. to investigate the multi-vehicle accident. Knoxville Police Department indicated that an elderly man's Chevrolet Suburban crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Nissan Rogue and subsequently a Nissan Frontier.
Official statements confirm the fatalities as Krista Maples, 31, and her 10-year-old son, both of Knoxville, occupants in the Nissan Rogue. Clayton Chandler, 74, also of Knoxville, the driver of the Suburban, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the investigators, evidence suggested that the victims were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Additionally, they suspect that Chandler may have suffered a medical event that could have led to the disastrous incident.
Surviving the crash were three children from the Nissan Rogue, who were transported to the UT Medical Center with grave injuries. Their ages were disclosed as 8, 4, and 2. The sole occupant of the Nissan Frontier encountered only minor injuries, a fortunate outcome amidst the havoc.
