A devastating house fire in South Memphis has claimed the life of a local woman, Wanda Rucker-Pipkins, aged 54. She was reported to have just returned from the hospital the day before the fire erupted. The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, June 4, and also left three of her relatives injured, according to WREG.
The Memphis Fire Department was called to the scene in the 1900 block of Clovia Lane at around 10:30 a.m., following reports of a fire that ultimately spread to adjacent homes. Witnesses recounted hearing an explosion, although the cause of the fire is yet to be established. One woman was found deceased outside the home, and the three injured family members were transported to a hospital; the other woman is in critical condition, and the men sustained non-critical injuries, Local Memphis reported.
Tiffany Rucker, the niece of the deceased, relayed to WREG her aunt's recent health struggles and hopes for rehabilitation. "She actually called and told me she needed some help, trying to get her stuff back together," Tiffany said. "So, we was hoping she could get to rehab so she could walk and get her health back together. But you know, God had other plans and we just have to go ahead and move on and continue to pray for us and pray for my family."
The Rucker family has experienced the dual tragedies of losing a loved one and the childhood home of the victim's brother, Larry Rucker. "I ask for the community’s prayers for the family. My sister was deceased in the fire. She had just come home from the hospital. I’m just grateful that more people weren’t hurt. They [the other three victims] went to the hospital and they’re out now. And I thank God for his assurance that everything is going to work out," Larry told Action News 5. The family is planning to establish a GoFundMe to cover the costs of funeral arrangements.
