DeKalb County is once again a focal point for violence following two shooting incidents at local gas stations. In the first incident, a man sought help at a Circle K on Glenwood Road after being shot. Despite the rapid response of medics who transported him to a local hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries. FOX 5 reported that the shooting occurred around 2 a.m., and the DeKalb County Police are working to uncover where the shooting took place and the circumstances that led up to the tragic event.
Meanwhile, a separately distressing occurrence unfolded around the same time at an Atlanta’s Best Wings shop located in a gas station plaza on Covington Highway. Surveillance video showed a confrontation between two individuals that quickly devolved into violence. After one of the individuals was shot, he dragged himself across the store floor to a corner, and then the shooter returned to grab what seemed to be a backpack, only to be shot at by the initial victim. Atlanta News First obtained the harrowing footage, which displayed three bullet holes in the storefront glass.
Evidence of the shootout was still visible the following day, with the affected stores showing bullet-riddled facades. The police spent several hours at the scenes, collecting bullet casings and forensic evidence, and canvassing the area for witnesses. While details of the shooter's condition remain scant, the second incident's volatility reflects a deeper narrative of unrest in the community.
"I didn't know what was going on. I just thought the guy was on the ground drunk or something. You know what I mean," described Mario Marshall, walking into the plaza, who was recounted to the events by a store clerk. Addressing the sheer normalcy with which violence asserts itself, Sheri Bratton, a local resident, expressed her exasperation to Atlanta News First, stating, "Frustrating. I mean this commnity, it happens over and over, and I live here. So, I don’t feel safe and it’s sad."
The back-to-back shootings raise alarming questions about safety and the prevalence of gun-related violence in the area. DeKalb County residents are left seeking solace in a community continually rattled by such unfathomable events. As the investigation proceeds, authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the DeKalb County Police Department.
