An unsettling reminder of the dangers of drunk driving comes from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), highlighting the ongoing fight to safeguard lives on the road. In a sobering statistic, an average of 89 Texans lost their lives each month in alcohol-related crashes last year. According to a recent TxDOT report, this equates to nearly three deaths per day, an unnecessary toll brought on by the preventable decision to drink and drive.

Charles and Shenica Trammell's pain is a testament to the devastation wrought by drunk driving. Their son, a 21-year-old Texas Wesleyan University football player, was tragically killed while providing roadside assistance to a friend. "We taught our son to serve others, not knowing that he would actually die while doing so," Shen said, "All because someone made the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking."

These personal tragedies serve as the emotional core of TxDOT's Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign, aimed at pre-empting the summer spike in drunk-driving fatalities. A traveling exhibit now showcases first-person testimonials from survivors, offenders, and the bereaved, offering a stark insight into the heartache caused by such recklessness. TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, "Drunk driving can change lives forever." He further elaborated on the broad spectrum of consequences, from devastating injuries to the ruin of careers and relationships.

Over the upcoming Independence Day holiday, TxDOT, combined with increased law enforcement patrols, intends to significantly reduce DUI-related incidents. While the decline of drunk driving deaths by 15% in 2023 from the previous year is a positive sign, the agency's efforts are unending. Their initiative is part of the #EndTheStreakTX movement, a push to completely eradicate daily deaths on Texas roads—a streak that has been ongoing since Nov. 7, 2000. TxDOT urges motorists to continue making safe choices, not only protect their lives but also the lives of others.
