Big news on the college sports front as the University of Memphis welcomes Dr. Ed Scott as its new Athletic Director, stepping into a pivotal role and looking to chart a future for Tiger Athletics. According to an announcement from the university yesterday, as detailed by Action News 5, Scott takes the reins after a stint as Virginia's Deputy Athletic Director, bringing with him a track record of leadership and accolades, including a national Athletic Director of the Year award.
Serving since January 2022 at Virginia, Scott managed key athletic programs and offered his expertise as a special adviser in football operations. Before his tenure at Virginia, as WTOP reported, he led Morgan State University's athletics as Vice President and Director, a role which earned him nods for his contributions to collegiate sports management.
UofM President Bill Hardgrave praised the hire, seeking a "forward-thinking, transformative leader" for Memphis and declaring, "We found that leader in Dr. Scott." The president's remarks, heralding a new chapter for the university's sports programs, were recounted by Action News 5. Scott steps into shoes vacated by former Athletic Director Laird Veatch, who moved on to a similar post at the University of Missouri.
In a statement obtained by Action News 5, Scott expressed his eagerness about the move, mentioning Memphis has "been on my radar for some time." "With exceptional student-athletes, coaches and staff" behind him, Scott anticipates great achievements ahead. Officially, he'll be introduced to Memphis at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center during a Friday press conference.
Laird Veatch, having steered Memphis Athletics since October 2019 before his departure in April for Missouri, left a legacy of growth and commitment. Dr. Scott, now bearing the mantle, looks to build upon these foundations with the backing of a "proud and motivated city," ready to navigate the dynamics of intercollegiate athletics and propel the Tigers to new heights. As reported by Action News 5, the Memphis community is gearing up to see how Scott's vision unfolds in the seasons to come.
