The University of Texas has swung for the fairways and landed a seasoned pro as their new Women's Golf Head Coach, snagging Laura Ianello from the University of Arizona, as announced by the Texas Longhorns. Ianello, who drove the Arizona Wildcats to a national championship in 2018, will now tee up to lead the Longhorns, replacing the recently departed Ryan Murphy.
Ianello's transition, detailed by KXAN, comes after 14 seasons as the head coach at Arizona, with a tenure marked by multiple NCAA Championship appearances and developing notable student-athletes. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte was quick to boast about her recruiting, "She is one of the nation's elite golf coaches, absolutely checks all the boxes as a leader and person and is a highly-respected coach with a great reputation in the collegiate golf community," in a statement released by Texas Sports.
Her leap to Texas was partly prompted by Del Conte's influence, who also shares a connection to Arizona. Ianello admitted to an emotional response upon receiving the offer to join the Longhorns. "When I got the call, it excited me in a way I haven’t felt in a long time," Ianello told KXAN. She mentioned that the resources available within the Texas program were a significant draw as a coach aiming to cultivate championship-winning teams.
On the greens of Texas, Ianello is set to continue a narrative of success, bringing her playbook from a Wildcats program that she led to numerous victories and through changing times in collegiate athletics. She is already familiar with the talent pool, having recruited some of the players she will now coach at UT. Those players had previously snubbed Arizona for the Longhorns, thus, she is well-positioned to tee up a robust development program for her new team.
Her appointment also resonates well beyond the last season's stats. As a former player with an LPGA Tour experience and a national championship to her coaching name, Ianello's practical expertise and leadership skills have been touted as a top draw for the Texas program. "Laura is a program builder with a championship pedigree, and she truly cares about developing her student-athletes," Del Conte said in the Texas Sports release. Acknowledging her past accomplishments that include academic recognition for her players and a tradition of excellence on and off the course, Texas is betting on Ianello to bring that same magic to a Longhorns team coming off a Big 12 Conference championship and an 11th-place NCAA finish.
