An Ypsilanti man has been brought before the court, facing serious charges after a fatal crash that occurred in Canton Township. Maurice Griffin, 37, was arraigned this past Saturday, standing accused of second-degree murder, among other charges, as reported by FOX 2. Griffin's collision with Desiree Jones, a mother of two, resulted in her untimely death. The accident took place on Michigan Avenue near Lilley Road shortly past midnight on June 6.
According to The Detroit News, Griffin, who previously held two drunk driving offenses, was not licensed to drive at the time of the crash. After the collision, Desiree Jones was pronounced dead while Griffin was taken in with non-life-threatening injuries. Charged with driving on a suspended license and operating a vehicle while intoxicated for a third time, Griffin's past is now converging with the present reckoning. His bond has been placed at a staggering $1 million cash, reflecting the gravity of the charges leviled against him.
In a heartrending account, Jones' husband recounted to FOX 2 how his wife was "joyful" and "smart," someone who could "make anybody smile." The tragedy cuts deeper as she was en-route to achieving her aspiration of becoming a nurse, having recently passed an exam in anticipation of entering nursing school next January. She leaves behind not just dreams deferred, but a family fractured, her children now without the nurturing presence of their mother.
Among the charges Griffin faces are operating a vehicle with a high blood alcohol content causing death with a prior conviction, with a sentence that could extend up to 20 years if convicted, and reckless driving causing death, as outlined by clickondetroit. The court has scheduled a probable cause conference for June 21, followed by a preliminary examination on June 28. In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, Police Chief Chad Baugh conveyed the profound impact of the incident on Jones' family, stating, "This tragedy has profoundly impacted her family, altering their lives forever." The community, now bearing witness to the painful aftermath, looks on as the wheels of justice begin to turn, slow but ostensibly firm.
