An 18-year-old man, identified as Gabriel Pedraza, fell victim to an early morning shooting on Monday in the near southeast side of Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the scene in the 1400 block of Nelson Avenue after receiving a silent 911 call around 12:30 a.m., as reported by WTHR. Officers were prompted by a neighbor to check a residence where gunshots were heard, leading them to discover Pedraza with gunshot injuries.
According to information obtained by WRTV, police swiftly transported the young man to a local hospital where he would soon succumb to his injuries. The events unraveled in a community just east of Interstate 65, an area that is no stranger to the echo of gunfire, and the ensuing silence that often follows such violence.
The Marion County Coroner's Office later confirmed Pedraza's identity. While IMPD reported locating a firearm at the scene, they have yet to confirm its involvement in the shooting. Further details remain sparse as detectives canvass the area for witnesses and information that might shed light on the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.
In an effort to gather more insight into the incident, IMPD has issued a call for anyone with knowledge of the event to step forward. Details remain limited, but police continue to actively investigate the situation while they work to piece together exactly how a life was cut dramatically short in the heart of their city. Community members grappling with the aftermath are asked to help, if they can, by sharing any information that might help clarify the moments that led to Pedraza's untimely death, as emphasized by IMPD in a statement given to WISH-TV.
