
The Portland Police Bureau has released the name of the pedestrian whose life was tragically cut short in the early hours of Sunday on Interstate 84. Tony Marvin Stephenson, 53, was struck by a vehicle just west of the I-205 interchange, and the incident has since been under intensive investigation.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the fatal event occurred at 4:41 a.m., when East Precinct officers responded to the crash site. Upon their arrival, Stephenson was found deceased, the involved driver had remained at the scene, and is cooperating with officials no arrests have been made yet cleanup operations are completed and the freeway has since been reopened to the public.
In an ongoing effort to enhance traffic safety and raise awareness among all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, the Portland Police Traffic Division is actively working in concert with the Bureau of Transportation. The division takes on the crucial task of curbing dangerous driving behaviors to prevent further tragedies such as this one – already marking the city's 26th traffic-related death this year, and the 10th pedestrian fatality, reflecting a somber statistic in the ongoing quest for safer streets.
