The Pima County Economic Development (PCED) team headed to San Francisco earlier this month to join Semicon West, a premier event in the semiconductor sector that attracted some of the most influential companies and professionals within the industry. According to Pima County News, from July 9-11, participants had the opportunity to engage on subjects ranging from AI systems to advanced manufacturing, a critical meetup for discussing the semiconductor ecosystem's most pressing opportunities and challenges.

Arizona's presence at the event was sizeable, highlighted by officials from PCED, the Arizona Commerce Authority, the City of Tucson Economic Initiatives, and representatives from Phoenix, Mesa, and Pinal County. The collective intent is to showcase the region as an ideal location for industry growth, especially notable seeing as Semicon West is scheduled to occur in Phoenix in 2025, for the first time outside San Francisco in half a century, also returning in 2027 and 2029 a significant move for a state that has recently secured 19 out of 83 new semiconductor projects noted by the Semiconductor Industry Association.

Drawing leverage from the CHIPS and Science Act enacted in 2022, Arizona has become increasingly competitive in attracting tech investments. The PCED alongside local counterparts from Tucson and the Arizona Commerce Authority diligently worked to entice industry leaders and innovators to consider the Pima County-Tucson area for their expansions, emphasizing the region's potential through strategic interactions during the conference as reported by Pima County News.

With the semiconductor industry's revival in the post-CHIPS Act era, events like Semicon West offer critical stages for states like Arizona to further cement their status in the tech industry; as noted in the Semiconductor Industry Association's report. The state's aggressive courting of projects has positioned it well within the U.S. market and the impending hosting of such a significant event in Phoenix underlines this ambition, the selection for future events further evidences its growing prominence in this high-tech business sector, a development that the PCED believes reflects the collective efforts of various stakeholders to boost the local economy by inviting more of these high-value companies to set up shop in the region.
