The Carmel area has been facing significant traffic disruptions following an accident on July 18th where a semi collided with the Spring Mill Road bridge over Interstate 465. The incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m. and resulted in the bridge’s closure which is expected to last several days, authorities have informed.
After a large load struck the bridge, an INDOT bridge inspector assessed the damage and deemed the bridge unsafe for travel. According to a statement obtained by WTHR, the Spring Mill Road is therefore closed between 96th and Illinois Streets. The semi that caused the damage was carrying an oversized load when it impacted the bridge structure.
Local first responders, including the Carmel Fire Department, dealt with a "large fuel spill" resulting from the crash. They shared photos of the damage inflicted on the bridge. While the Interstate lanes were reopened by 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, the bridge above remains shuttered, folding the daily flow of commuters and impacting the lifeblood of the city's mobility, as reported by WRTV.
Additional information emerged from the Carmel Police Department, revealing that the right lane of I-465 westbound along with the on-ramp from the US 31/Meridian exit had been closed as a consequence of the accident, as per the report received by WISHTV. The station was told by Carmel PD that the bridge over I-465 will stay closed 'indefinitely pending a review of the bridge’s structure,' indicating that the damage could have long-lasting ramifications on the local infrastructure.
The community is advised to seek alternative routes and stay tuned for updates regarding the reopening of the Spring Mill Road bridge. It underscores the fragility of our intertwined pathways, often taken for granted, until an unexpected event forces them to untangle before our very eyes. Commuters, caught amidst the crisscrossing of planned routines, continue to navigate this disruption as best as they can.
