As the 4th of July draws near, Charlotte Fire Department is issuing a public safety reminder about fireworks. In a statement published earlier today, officials laid out clear guidelines to help ensure residents partake in celebrations without falling afoul of the law or risking injury. They emphasize the safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending public displays conducted by licensed professionals, as outlined on City of Charlotte website.
With the approach of Independence Day revelry, it's crucial to recognize that not all fireworks are legal in the state of North Carolina. According to Charlotte Fire, illegal fireworks in North Carolina include firecrackers, ground spinners, bottle rockets, Roman candles, and aerial fireworks. Their guideline is simple: if it's meant to explode or to be launched into the air, it’s likely illegal. They urge residents to instead safely enjoy legal fireworks, such as snake and glow worms, smoke devices, trick noisemakers, and wire sparklers.
The Charlotte Fire Department also shared a series of safety tips for those choosing to use legal fireworks. Recommendations include purchasing from reputable vendors and evolving a responsible adult to handle fireworks at all times. Fireworks should not be altered or made at home, and they should be stored in a cool, dry place away from any potential ignitable materials. They also caution against loose clothing when igniting fireworks and advise having a hose or bucket of water on standby in case of an emergency.
Statistics from the Charlotte Fire Department reveal the potential dangers of fireworks when mishandled. In 2019, 149 people went to the emergency room for firework-related injuries in North Carolina, and nationwide, more than 9,000 people were treated for such injuries. Moreover, they note that fireworks are behind more than 19,500 reported fires a year, demonstrating the necessity of following safety precautions. Children, particularly those under 5 years of age, are especially vulnerable, accounting for more than half of the total estimated injuries. Handheld sparklers, which are often widely seen as harmless, can burn at temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, underlining the importance of caution even with legal fireworks.
Charlotte Fire's message ahead of this national holiday is clear, enjoy the festivities, but do so with awareness and adherence to safety guidelines. By staying informed on what is legal, and by following recommended safety measures, Charlotte residents can look forward to a holiday that celebrates not only our nation's independence but also our collective commitment to keeping each other safe.
