In a high-speed incident that escalated quickly, a Chicago man was arrested near the Georgia State Capitol after leading Fulton County deputies on a chase and crashing his vehicle. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the chase unfolded when 27-year-old Jimmy Kendal Smith, in a Toyota Camry, was seen driving erratically on I-75 this past Friday. Attempts by a deputy to perform a traffic stop were in vain, as Smith allegedly sped off, colliding with other cars.
With Smith leading the rapid traverse through Atlanta, the pursuit ended near the state's political heartland as a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, was executed by deputies on Capitol Avenue. As the deputies approached to conclude the affair, Smith's vehicle entanglement with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office was described by Atlanta News First, as having struck at least five other cars during the chase before its culmination into a crash. Throughout the incident, there was a fortunate absence of injuries.
Smith has now been processed through to the stage of legal consequence, facing a slew of charges including battery-family violence, criminal trespass, damage to property, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, and multiple counts of hit-and-run. Smith's detainment is ongoing in the Fulton County Jail, pending her journey through the justice system's channels.
The effectiveness of the Sheriff's team did not go unnoticed, with Sheriff Pat Labat commending his personnel's proactive response. "I cannot say enough how proud I am of our team. They have proven to be in the right place at the right time, time and time again," Labat stated, as recognized by the commendation from both sources. With the situation under control, Labat showed his appreciation for the seamless coordination which brought an end to the chase that was posing risk to the public's safety.
