A Chicago man faces serious charges after an alleged attempt to hijack a vehicle and a subsequent home invasion in the city's 12th District. According to the Chicago Police Department, 38-year-old Jonathan Morris, from the 1900 block of S. Spaulding, was detained by officers at approximately 3:45 p.m. on July 1, after being identified as the individual who attempted to take a car from a disabled 62-year-old woman less than an hour and a half earlier.
According to police, the incident took place in the 1100 block of S. Laflin, where Morris also reportedly attempted to force entry into a residence shortly after the vehicular hijacking attempt, with individuals present in the home, as per the Chicago Police Department. Placed in custody, Morris is now charged with one felony count each of attempted vehicular hijacking, criminal trespass to a residence, and aggravated battery to a victim aged 60 or older.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Morris's arrest were not disclosed by the authorities. However, he's scheduled for a detention hearing at the location of 2600 S. California on July 3. A news release from the Chicago Police Department cites these alleged crimes carry the aggravating factor of the victim's handicap status, which could potentially lead to harsher punishments if Morris is convicted.
