A grim Fourth of July for one Chicago man as festivities turned into a fatal tragedy. Earl Lory, 34, was killed when a firework he was trying to operate malfunctioned, inflicting trauma that ended his life. The incident occurred in Hermosa, within the 3000 block of North Kostner Avenue, around 10:00 P.M., according to reports from the Chicago Sun-Times.
Chicago police indicated that Lory had lit a mortar that failed to detonate initially. In the courting of danger, he attempted to relight the device while standing over it. The resultant explosion struck Lory in the head with lethal force, as detailed in a follow-up by CWB Chicago. Lory, hailing from the city’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood, did not survive the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The occurrence is not the first of its nature in Chicago, where fireworks have claimed lives before over recent years. Records unearthed from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office point to at least two other individuals who met their demise in fireworks-related incidents. In 2017, an 18-year-old suffered fatal craniocerebral injuries, while a 52-year-old man experienced a similar tragic end in 2019.
Just earlier this week, as Chicago prepared for its Independence Day celebrations, authorities pressed felony charges against a man accused of smuggling professional-grade fireworks into the city from Indiana.
