Chicago's neighborhoods are on high alert as a string of burglaries rattles both the 16th and 20th Districts. Area Five Detectives are on the hunt for three male suspects, all captured on surveillance video breaking into local businesses with nothing but a hammer, masks, and the cover of night to shield them. The rash of break-ins took place in the early hours of July 19, with businesses at four separate locations being targeted in swift succession.
All incidents reveal a troubling pattern: the offenders smashed the front glass doors, swept into establishments, and departed with cash registers, safes, and any available cash. At around 2:25 AM, the first burglary occurred on the 1400 Block of West Balmoral Ave., followed by a break-in on the 6100 Block of North Northwest Hwy. at 2:50 AM. With hardly any time to breathe, two more burglaries were reported on the 6700 Block of North Olmsted Ave. at 3:18 AM and 3:19 AM. According to the Chicago Police Department, the offenders are young males, aged between 16-25, wearing black masks, black hooded sweatshirts, black pants, and gloves.
Chicago Police Department urges residents and business owners to remain vigilant. Steps to bolster security are recommended, such as installing operational surveillance cameras and keeping an eye out for any unusual loitering nearby. Community members are advised to pay special attention to suspicious activity and to report any relevant details, including vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers, to 911 immediately.
In response to the break-ins, the police released a video showing the subjects entering the businesses, as per the CPD. Anyone with information is encouraged to step forward and assist in the identification of these individuals, who took more than just money.
