
A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, sparking a police investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation on Wednesday afternoon. According to Chicago police, officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of South King Drive around 5:40 p.m. in response to a ShotSpotter alert. Police found Phillip Mitchell lying near the street, mortally wounded with gunshot injuries to his head and body, ABC7 Chicago reported.
Witnesses described an altercation involving Mitchell, another adolescent, and the alleged gunman. The incident, which swiftly escalated to violence, saw the suspect purportedly push Mitchell before the second individual proceeded to shoot him at close range, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The altercation and subsequent shooting were captured by a police POD camera surveillance system. Emergency responders rushed Mitchell to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m., as per the Chicago Sun-Times.
