A tragic series of events unfolded on Wednesday evening near Boynton Beach, where a high-speed crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including one child, and critical injuries to others. According to CBS12, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported that a 2020 Lexus RX350, driven by 54-year-old Dawn Howard, was speeding on South Military Trail when it collided with a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, which carried four passengers, two of whom were children.
As detailed by the sheriff's office, Howard accelerated at the intersection on Miner Road to beat a yellow light, lost control in a left-hand curve, causing her vehicle to roll over. In the aftermath of the crash, Grechy Almaguer-Perez, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 10-year-old, whose identity remains undisclosed, died after being transported to Delray Medical Center. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 46-year-old man, suffered injuries described by investigators as an internal decapitation and, despite the efforts of medical professionals, is not expected to survive.
In a tragic turn for the youngest victims, a two-year-old boy now lies in Delray Medical Center with a broken right tibia. Meanwhile, Howard sustained minor injuries and later faced confrontation with law enforcement at the same hospital. As reported by WPTV, the arrest affidavit states that Howard, being under suspicion for her role in the crash, resisted orders from deputies and proceeded to slap a deputy's wrist when restricted to her hospital room.
After the collision, Howard was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer when deputies had to restrain and handcuff her to the hospital bed. The crash investigation has broader implications beyond this immediate altercation, as the crash report indicates Howard was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Charges against her for her alleged role in causing the tragic incident are pending. The repercussions of a moment's haste — attempting to run a red light — have unfolded into a tapestry of loss and legal entanglements.
