The City of San Diego is about to kick off a new phase of its Pure Water program starting on Sunday, July 7, with crews installing pipelines at the busy Clairemont Drive and Balboa Avenue intersection. Anyone traveling through the area should brace for potential delays, as the work schedule runs late from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and is intended to last for about 10 days, wrapping up on July 17, according to the City of San Diego.
This nighttime work schedule, a strategic move to reduce daytime traffic congestion, will lead to detours and lane reductions. Specifically, during construction hours, one lane of northbound and southbound traffic on Clairemont Drive will remain open, while eastbound and westbound traffic on Balboa Avenue will be rerouted. The informational update on traffic flow also comes with the assurance from the City's Public Utilities Department that all public safety precautions are in place, so commuters should heed the signage and perhaps pad schedules a bit to account for snags en route.
Juan Guerreiro, Director of the City's Public Utilities Department, expressed gratitude for the community's patience during this expansive project. "We appreciate the patience from commuters and nearby residents and businesses as we continue to make progress on the Pure Water program," Guerreiro stated, as per the City of San Diego. He emphasized their commitment to minimizing the traffic disruptions as much as possible during this key infrastructure venture.
The Pure Water program is a significant initiative by the City of San Diego aimed at securing nearly half of the local water supply by 2035 through the purification of recycled water, a step toward sustainability, which, upon the completion of Phase 1, will deliver around 30 million gallons of high-quality water daily—the undertaking is reportedly over 55% complete, and further constructions are to pave the way for Phase 2, planning for it is currently underway. It's set to provide an impressive add-on of 53 million gallons a day.
