According to the Nashville Fire Department, the blaze, believed to have originated on the balcony of a third-floor apartment before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, caused a section of the building's roof to collapse. FOX 17 reported that the two-alarm fire led to the partial collapse of the roof on one side of Building 21.
Flight and safety were made possible by the courageous actions of a man running, Philliph Bonner. He, who through the halls alerting his neighbors to the encroaching danger, was credited with saving lives as flames ripped through the building. "Amazing, he was sent from above. He was running through the halls, making sure everyone was out, so he was awesome," Tonia Myers said in a statement obtained by WSMV. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by NFD, all residents and pets were reported safe, with no injuries conveyed.
As firefighters managed to keep the fire contained between the breezeways, ensuring it did not spread to adjacent structures, fire crews faced heavy smoke and flames visible from the third floor upon their arrival.
