The Sheriff's Office has observed a spike in reports about this fraudulent activity. Victims are targeted with threats of arrest unless they immediately head to locations like the Daley Center or the Sheriff’s Police Headquarters in Maywood to pay invented fines. These tactics, designed to coerce and panic, are a stark deviation from legitimate law enforcement procedures, which never involve phone-based ultimatums or solicitations for payment over the phone.
As the scam ensnares more individuals in its web of deceit, the public is urged to exercise skepticism and caution. Those receiving calls of this nature should inquire about the caller’s full name, badge number, and phone number, but most importantly, they should refuse to follow the caller’s instructions. Before taking any action, the authenticity of the caller and the claim should be independently verified by contacting the alleged department directly.
