Amidst a backdrop of increasingly digital modernity, a small coastal haven has caught Oregon's eye for its unwavering commitment to history. Coos Bay, a community with roots as deep as the Douglas Firs lining the Oregon Trail, has earned the prestigious “Oregon Heritage All-Star Community” designation, as reported recently by Oregon newsroom. This remarkable achievement signals not just acknowledgment but also a celebration of the town's efforts to preserve its storied past and make it accessible to all.
The Oregon Heritage Commission's All-Star program isn't just handing out gold stars for attendance; a community must meet at least 15 out of 24 benchmarks related to heritage preservation and development to even be considered. Museums, photo archives, and historic downtowns are among the checklist items, and, simply put, Coos Bay has managed to present a compelling portfolio showcasing such attributes. Whether through heritage tourism efforts or the maintenance of historic cemeteries, the city has demonstrated broad and enthusiastic participation in heritage-related activities.
"Coos Bay has a long and broad history," said Katie Henry, coordinator for the Oregon Heritage Commission, as noted by the Oregon Newsroom. The collective efforts of the city, from tribal groups to local shops and museums, have not only stitched together a detailed historical narrative but also contributed to Coos Bay's economy and living standards. On July 23, 2024, at the city council's work session, Coos Bay will formally embrace its new heritage laurels.
Chiming in with the coastal celebration, Mayor Benetti praised the community's sustained dedication, having been quoted as saying, "This designation is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our community in preserving Coos Bay’s rich heritage, we are honored to receive this recognition and are committed to continuing our efforts in celebrating and safeguarding our history for future generations," as reported by the Oregon Newsroom. The heritage baton, now handed to Coos Bay, comes with the responsibility to maintain at least their 15 criterion strongholds to keep this new status secure. The city has been promised technical aid by the commission for this herculean task.
As a member of the Heritage All-Star league, Coos Bay stands shoulder to shoulder with other Oregon cities such as Albany, Astoria, and Bend. The Oregon Heritage Commission, composed of diverse members and advisors appointed by the governor, plays the dual role of gatekeeper and cheerleader for the state's cultural legacy. Their initiatives range from education to celebration, hoping to highlight the mosaic that is Oregon's heritage.
