Early this morning, a driver heading south on South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood of Chicago endured a harrowing experience when they drove into the wrong lane, causing a collision that ended with their vehicle embedded in a local building. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred just before 3:15 a.m., leading to critical injuries for the wrong-way driver who was then taken to UChicago Medicine for treatment.
The Chicago police confirmed that the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and was transported in good condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, as per the Chicago Tribune. Following the incident, Chicago Fire Department officials were summoned to assess the structural safety of the struck building. Miraculously, no one inside the building was harmed, even as the impact left significant damage to the structure – a large hole marking the violent intrusion of steel and glass into brick and life.
Residents of the community were startled awake by the sound of the crash. "I was in my bed sleeping when I heard a 'boom' and I had no idea what it was," said Verda Long, as stated by ABC7 Chicago. She explained how the startling disruption in the night drove her to witness the chaotic aftermath from her apartment.
