The City of Delray Beach is stepping up its community game with the launch of the Citizens' Academy, a program aimed at giving locals a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of their government. Starting October 18, this free initiative will encompass five weekly sessions, slated for Friday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., according to a recent announcement on the city's official website.
City officials are keen on shedding light on the day-to-day operations that keep Delray Beach, dubbed the #1 Best Beach in Florida by USA TODAY's 2024 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, running smoothly. Anyone aged 18 or older, who lives or owns a business within city limits can join, with space for the program capped at 25 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Responding to the initiative, City Manager Terrence Moore said, "We look forward to giving residents and business owners an insider's look at how our local government runs and introducing them to the various city leaders." Moore detailed the prospect of the initiative building trust and fostering a dialogue between the city and its stakeholders.
Sign-ups for the academy begin on August 1 and will remain open until September 3. Those interested in joining the inaugural fall class should note that proof of age, and residency, or business ownership will be required when registering. Those making the cut will wrap up their experience with a special Graduation Presentation during the November 19 Delray Beach City Commission Meeting at city hall.
Delray Beach, apart from earning the bragging rights as a premier beach location, is also recognized for its All-America City triumphs in 1993, 2001, and 2017, a record-setting achievement within Florida. With accolades ranging from being a top choice for small businesses to hosting one of America’s 10 Great Shopping Streets, Delray Beach officials are looking to the Citizens' Academy to further integrate the community's voice in its ongoing evolution. Transportation to the various session locations, however, falls upon the participants themselves.
