A civilian jailer from the City of Denton Jail has been taken into custody and charged with official oppression, stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct with a recently released inmate, authorities at the Denton Police Department report. Last Wednesday, a complaint was filed by an adult female asserting that on January 2, 2023, after her release from the facility, jail employee Miguel Mederos, aged 22, made unwanted sexual advances toward her during a car ride he offered her to her vehicle, and later through text messages.

The Denton Police took swift action following the complaint, placing Mederos on administrative leave as their investigation unfolded. During this period detectives sifted through evidence and conducted interviews which led them to the conclusion that Mederos, leveraging his position as a public servant, deliberately engaged in sexual harassment seeking sexual favors from the victim, during the interaction which was purported to be conducted under the guise of a gesture of assistance. According to the City of Denton, Texas, Mederos, who had been employed at the jail since June 2022, was terminated from his role yesterday, and promptly arrested with his bond set at $2,500.

Interim Police Chief Jessica Robledo remarked on the gravity of the transgression and the department's commitment to upholding the high expectations of their community, stating, as per the City of Denton, Texas, "Our community is accustomed to a high level of police services, and it is essential that our actions reflect this reputation. The behavior of this individual is unfortunate and certainly does not represent the values of Denton’s law enforcement," expressing her disappointment in the conduct that belied the principles they stand for, she stressed the importance of maintaining standards, saying, "All Denton PD employees are held to the highest of standards in our City and when their actions are inconsistent with this expectation, we have a duty to act swiftly", she then praised the detectives' diligent efforts in upholding a fair process.

The Denton Police Department invites any individuals with information concerning this case to come forward and has encouraged the public to report possible misconduct involving its staff members by contacting Internal Affairs Sgt. Michael McIntire at 940-349-8965.
