Early this morning, a dramatic event unfolded as Officer Joshua Barber, a member of the Yarmouth Police Department, witnessed a car speeding down Route 28 suddenly lose control. According to a Facebook post by the police department, the vehicle swerved off the road, hit a sidewalk and crashed into a utility pole, ultimately flipping and coming to a rest on its roof. The accident, which occurred just before 2 a.m., not only led to a power outage but also necessitated the temporary closure of the road as emergency teams responded.
Officer Barber, who was near the scene when the crash took place, called for backup while two of the car's occupants, now emerged and injured, waited for help. A third individual, trapped in the wreckage, received assistance from additional officers who arrived shortly after. Each of the car’s passengers was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by the Yarmouth Fire Department with injuries assessed as non-life-threatening. The driver has since been charged with Operating Under the Influence, shedding light on a persistent and dangerous behavior on our roadways.
The aftermath of the accident affected local residents, who faced a power outage as crews worked to clear the accident scene and restore normalcy. While the disruption was temporary, the impact of such incidents stretches far beyond the immediate inconveniences, serving as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. The road was reopened after the necessary operations were carried out by the emergency services.
