In an unfortunate incident in Elgin, a dog was shot and killed by police after aggressively attacking its owners. The event occurred Thursday evening, just shy of 5 p.m. on the 900 block of High Street, according to NBC Chicago. Responding to distress calls, the officers arrived to find the animal assaulting a man and woman, described as the dog's owners.
According to witness accounts, the violence unfolded while the owners were walking their pet, who became enraged by the sight of another dog. "It attacked both the owners and finally grabbed the woman's arm and it got both of her arms and tore down to the bone. It was pretty bad," Mark Freshour told ABC7 Chicago about the attack. Efforts to disengage the dog proved ineffectual, as the determined canine maintained its grip on the woman.
Encountering a critical situation, an Elgin police officer made the decision to discharge their firearm, resulting in the dog's death. The man and woman were subsequently taken to a local hospital, suffering from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, as stated by officers at the scene and later confirmed by both NBC Chicago and ABC 7.
The dramatic intervention of law enforcement appeared to be essential for the victims' survival. "There was no way to get that dog to turn loose, it was clamped on so hard. They were trying for five minutes to get the dog off. Police got here, they had to shoot," Freshour explained. He also suggested that the intervention likely saved the woman's life, citing the severity of the bleeding. "I'm sure they did. She would have bled out. She was bleeding in so many places, it was awful," he recounted the grisly details of the incident to ABC7 Chicago. Despite the harrowing circumstances, police ensured to provide first aid immediately following the incident.
As of now, no further details have been released by the Elgin Police Department regarding the incident.
