Coined the "Rocket Man Resale," the event, which was announced during Pride Month, kicked off June 27 and ran through eBay's platform for a span of 10 days, complete with a livestream shopping event that starred John and his husband, David Furnish.
With an astonishing array of pieces up for grabs, the auction included bespoke Gucci jackets and Versace robes alongside customized Prada loafers, but it also encompassed more casual items like historic concert T-shirts and baseball caps, with starting bids set at $26.60—a nod to John’s one-time residence on Atlanta's famed Peachtree Road, eBay's press release revealed that the assortment is not just a collection but a chronicle of fashion and music history, and to own any of John's pre-loved items is to hold a piece of that storied timeline. "Elton John’s wardrobe is decades in the making — to own something worn by him is to own a piece of music and fashion history," Charis Marquez, VP of Fashion at eBay, said in a statement.
John, known for his enduring impact on both the music scene and philanthropic efforts, expressed his longstanding commitment to repurposing his personal treasures for charitable causes. "Giving new life to the cherished items from my wardrobe has always been special to me," John said in a statement, noting the dual excitement of sharing his wardrobe and supporting the Foundation's mission to combat LGBTQ+ stigma and promote HIV care.
Moreover, the collaboration extended beyond the digital hammer, as eBay customers had the opportunity to donate to the Elton John AIDS Foundation directly at checkout from June 23 through June 30, 2024, Anne Aslett, CEO of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, highlighted the significance of the initiative not just for Pride Month but as a continuous effort to eradicate the societal barriers in accessing vital HIV services, "By participating in this auction, you will help support our programs to end the stigma and discrimination that prevent so many from accessing lifesaving HIV care — an important message not just for Pride Month, but every day of the year," Aslett stated.
