Tragedy struck on a Knoxville roadway yesterday afternoon as a multi-vehicle collision claimed the life of one and left traffic in disarray. WVLT reported that the Knoxville Police Department was called to the scene of a deadly crash on I-40 West near Pellissippi Parkway at approximately 4:15 p.m.
Initial findings suggest that a white SUV, which had slowed in response to traffic conditions, was hit from behind by a black pickup truck and this collision set off a chain-reaction with two other vehicles becoming involved, according to WATE. The resulting crash led to the death of the SUV's driver, an adult man who was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries but no other injuries were reported.
In the wake of the collision, authorities shut down three lanes of the westbound I-40, causing traffic backups that stretched for miles. The investigation into the crash continues, with details about the identification of the deceased being withheld pending notification of next of kin. WBIR noted that, while the investigation is ongoing, no further updates have been provided on the condition of the survivors or the progression of the traffic delays.
