At around 5:30 p.m. last Thursday, local firefighters responded to a blaze at a commercial egg farm near Witch Creek. Upon arrival, the team found a 25,000-square-foot building engulfed in flames, posing a danger to surrounding vegetation. Details from Cal Fire San Diego's Instagram update indicate that aggressive firefighting tactics prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
Keeping the fire contained was a combined effort. With 85 firefighters tackling the flames on the ground, Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Sheriff's aircraft worked to ensure the fire did not reach the dry brush waiting, ready to ignite, nearby. Despite the heavy fire, the crews' rapid response allowed for the blaze to be confined to the original building, as they remained vigilant, extinguishing hotspots through the night into the early Friday morning hours.
The farm, a key facility in the area's food production chain, suffered significant damage to one of its primary buildings. Though no injuries have been reported, the financial and operational toll on the farm has yet to be assessed. The source of the fire is currently under investigation, and officials have not released any potential causes.
