Georgians invested in the future of the state's agricultural lands can mark their calendars for an upcoming public meeting of significance. The Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands is about to convene for the first time, with discussions poised to address the critical factors impacting the state's rural landscapes. Chaired by Sen. Billy Hickman (R–Statesboro), this meeting is scheduled for July 30, 2024, at the Georgia Southern University's Continuing Education Building located at 10449 US Highway 301 in Statesboro, according to the Senate Press.
Set to start at 10:00 a.m., the gathering invites the general public to either attend in person or follow the live stream on the Georgia General Assembly website. Guest speakers are slated to include influential figures like Dr. Kyle Marrero, President of Georgia Southern University, and Katherine Moore, President of Georgia Conservancy, Inc., among others. Informing the committee's direction, Heidi Jeffers, Director of Georgia Grown Innovation Center, and Tyler Harper, Commissioner of Georgia Department of Agriculture will contribute their expertise on the pressing needs facing Georgia's farmlands.
As mentioned by the Senate Press announcement, the committee's task is to thoroughly probe the conditions and challenges that presently shape the agricultural sector in Georgia. These include studying issues linked to farmland preservation, identifying problems, and proposing solutions which may entail legislative or action-based recommendations aimed at safeguarding the state's agrarian heritage and resources.
Recognizing the importance of transparency and inclusion in such a critical discourse, the doors are open for media involvement. Sydney Horwitz, the contact for media representatives wishing to confirm attendance, can be reached at [email protected]. By offering a platform for widespread civic participation, the committee underscores its commitment to finding equitable and sustainable pathways for the maintenance of Georgia's farmland legacy.
