Medford police apprehended five teenagers following a chase that ended in a residential collision today. The incident began with a reported shoplifting at a local DICK’s Sporting Goods. According to NBC Boston, Medford authorities responded around 11 a.m. after being alerted to the theft at the store located at 3850 Mystic Valley Parkway.
An employee provided a detailed account of the getaway vehicle, which turned out to be stolen from Belmont earlier. A chase ensued when police located the car traveling at high speeds across several streets, cutting through Commercial Street, and then onto Route 16 westbound to Winthrop Street, and finally to High Street. The pursuit culminated when the vehicle bore through a home's fence on Alto Drive, as reported by WHDH. Two of the suspects were apprehended in the vehicle, while the remaining three attempted to flee the scene.
Following the crash, Medford police conducted a thorough search involving both a state police helicopter and a K9 unit, eventually locating and arresting the three fugitives. Remarkably, no injuries were reported from the incident. Law enforcement personnel were seen retrieving various items from the crashed vehicle including a phone, clothes, and a lock of hair, before the car was towed away, leaving behind damaged property and debris, as per WHDH.
While the teenagers have been taken into custody, the exact charges they face are still undecided, pending further investigation. Nevertheless, the group is expected to face several charges as a consequence of the morning's tumultuous events, according to WCVB. We will follow up with more information on the specific charges once they have been formally filed by the authorities.
